Description - is the site where a 150-foot-square adobe fort was built by
Mormons in 1855 to give refuge to travelers bound for California. After the
departure of the Mormons in 1858, the site was developed as a ranch that
supplied blacksmith services and supplies to westward bound pioneers; it
later became a railroad stop, prompting land speculation that transformed the
town into what would become Las Vegas. Antiques and relics help re-create
a late 19th-century Mormon living room.
Guided tours are available; there also is a self-guiding exhibit. Allow 30

RED ROCK CANYON NATIONAL CONSERVATION AREA

Description - is a 67,500-acre preserve containing such outstanding
geological formations as the Keystone Thrust Fault, which reveals the
contrast between layers of gray limestone and red sandstone. A 13-mile
scenic loop road passes a visitor center then winds through unusual high
desert terrain, which includes the 3,000-foot-high Red Rock Escarpment.
Self-guiding hiking trails lead to a spring, a waterfall, water catchment areas,
small canyons and the ruins of an old homestead. Because of the danger of
flash floods, avoid low-lying areas. Picnicking at Willow Spring on the
scenic loop road and primitive camping at Oak Creek Canyon are permitted.
